DNA Part 2
The door started to open, I took a deep breath and stood up straight and tried to act cool. Well as cool as someone holding a large pizza could look. There standing on the other side was Adrian. He immediately reached out and put his arm around my shoulders pulling me inside the room.
Adrian: Took you long enough. Aww how sweet you brought pizza. Our first date.
My eyes widened and I was speechless. He smiled then laughed fully at the expression my face must have been displaying.
Adrian: Dude, I am kidding. Glad you brought pizza! My girlfriend is a health nut and she would never let me eat this.
He starts to consume a slice and directs me to his laptop sitting on his desk. Before, I could even move he shoves me into the desk chair. He reaches over my shoulders to open his music library. He rests his body against mine as he searches for one of his personal favorites to play for me. The song begins to swell out of the speakers. He asked if I’d heard the whole FutureSex/LoveSounds album. I started to laugh because I had just bought it a couple days ago. I quickly switched to Until the End of Time and sang the first verse out loud. As the chorus rolled around Adrian got up off the bed and joined in the impromptu sing-along. I tried to hit JT’s high notes when the people next door started to bang on the wall. We only felt it right to finish the song before quieting down. Out of breath and tired from the dance that accompanied this karaoke session we both collapsed across the bed. The next track started to play in the background.
Me: So where’s your roommate? Do I know him?
Adrian: He is never here. He’s a tight end on the football team. Think his girl has an apartment off campus.
Me: Oh, so you’re a freshman with a private room basically. I would kill for this.
Adrian: It’s cool. Come over when you like. I’m either here or in class, or at the gym.
Me: Dude. I’ve been trying to workout more. We should lift together.
Adrian: Cool. My buddy has to work the front desk, so I usually workout alone. GYM BUDDIES!
His sudden outburst at the end of his sentence surprised me. I called him insane and we continued to lay there staring up at the ceiling and talking. He rolled over to reach for a another slice of pizza on the nightstand un-pausing the video game on the TV in the process. Shots started to rang out and his character was immediately killed by a grenade thrown at his feet. I grabbed the controller on the bed and restarted the level. Adrian watched as I navigated the imagined wasteland until I was once again at his place of game death. I attempted to outrun a flurry of missiles, but I too was cut down. I tried to complete the level 5 times as he looked on with nothing less than a smirk on his face at all times. After 20 minutes, he laughed and reached for the controller. I gladly released it to him. He put the controller back into my hands and scooted close enough for our bodies to touch. His hands become planted on top of mine as he guided me to what he believed to be the solution for beating the game.
He was successful. Damnit! I let out a muffled “so what.”
Adrian: You should be grateful. I just showed you how a real gamer beats this level.
Me: I would have gotten it.
Adrian: It would have taken you at least another hour.
Me: How would you know? This only came out last week.
Adrian: I know. I bought it then and finished it last week.
I jabbed him in the side to show my displeasure with his cocky attitude.
Me: You jerk! Why didn’t you just say that.
Adrian: You wouldn’t have taken my word for it anyway.
Adrian returned the favor by giving me an elbow to my side. I punched him in the arm, then he grabbed me around the neck. We wrestled a bit across the bed trying to show who was stronger. Guy Stuff. He pinned me to the bed, I wrapped my legs around his waist and forced him onto the floor. I landed on top of him and kept his hands above his head, so he couldn’t move.
Adrian: You’re stronger than you look
Me: And you’re weaker than I thought.
He smiled with that signature grin. I guess I’d become used to it because I just smiled back.
Adrian: Or maybe I just let you win…
Me: Yeah right, you could never beat me.
Adrian: Losing has its advantages too.
He swiftly raised his head to my level and without warning kissed me. I can’t remember how long it lasted, it seemed like a lifetime in that moment. He laid back down and stared up at me. I didn’t know what to say, I didn’t know what to do. I had never kissed by a guy. I had never kissed anyone before that moment. At the time, I knew this is what people meant when they said, “I saw fireworks.” Still dazed and confused, I opened my mouth to say something, but no words came out.
Over my head I saw the clock beside his bed; the time read 7:50. Adrian noticed what I was looking at and out of nowhere pushed me off and said it was time to go to the game. Apparently, his girlfriend is always nagging him about being late to things. Well, I couldn’t argue with her having experienced his ways first hand. He grabbed his keys and we headed out the door. Of course like all college students who have never paid a utility bill in their life, we leave all the lights, his laptop, and the TV on and running.
We sprinted across campus to the soccer field. I found us a couple seats close to the bottom of the bleachers. I didn’t know if that kiss just happened or if I should say anything. I certainly wasn’t going to bring it up in a crowd of people. I couldn’t stop staring at him. He kept giving me that grin. We sat there watching the game for a few minutes saying nothing. I wondered which girl was his girlfriend, then my question was answered.
OMG, I had become the mistress. The Mister!
I cringed as she strolled up to the fence beckoning Adrian down for a quick kiss on the cheek. He jumped up immediately and grabbed me by the hand to tag-along. He wanted me to meet her and she wanted to meet me apparently. There at the edge of the field stood, this beautiful deep chocolate skinned girl with eyes that shifted from green to brown. She was stunning, toned, with long naturally curly hair. I was taken by her sheer beauty. Adrian introduced me and she went in for a quick hug.
Adrian: Hey, this Morgan.
Me: Nice to meet you. You look awesome out there.
Morgan: So you’re the guy that Adrian keeps telling me about. Hope you’re as funny as he says.
She winked at me and turned to run back onto the field. We returned to our seats, but now the sections were noticeably less crowded. People had started to leave now that the game was in the last 15 minutes. I took this as an opportunity to investigate the stories that had been told about me. I waited until most of the section was empty and the nearest person was about 20 feet away.
Me: So you told your girlfriend about me. And what did you say?
Adrian: *laughs* Only that you disapproved of my work habits in class.
Me: Hmmm doesn’t sound like much, but…..
Adrian: Oh yeah and that you can’t keep your eyes off of me all class. And that you have a major crush on me.
Me: WTF! That is all false. I don’t have a crush on you. You’re not much to look at either.
Adrian: So you didn’t like the kiss?
His face was sort of nervous looking as he said that, his words seemed to crackle a bit. It was the first time I’d seen him show concern. I didn’t know if it was concern of whether I liked it really or whether he’d made a horrible mistake. His head kind of lowered as he waited for my response. I didn’t know what to say, so as usual I was completely honest.
Big mistake.
I turned my head away from him before I answered. I couldn’t look at him and say it out loud.
Me: It is not like I didn’t like it. But I don’t really have anything to compare it to.
He looked shocked. Then his eyes narrowed with a sinister grin, different from the grin I’m accustomed to now. This grin was one of intrigue and delight.
Adrian: I just corrupted you today right.
Me: Whoa, corrupted is a strong term. You surprised me that is all.
Adrian: Well the night is still young. Do you have any early classes tomorrow?
My mind was spinning. I wanted to lie and say yes. Things were moving so fast. I wasn’t sure if this was what I wanted.
Me: No, but…
Adrian: Well, come back to my room for a while. We can chat and stuff.
And stuff, what the hell did “and stuff” mean.
I said okay as the end of the game rang in and the girls ran to the center of the field to celebrate their win. Morgan blew a kiss to Adrian. He started to leave and I asked shouldn’t we wait. He said he told her earlier that he’d had a long day and was going to crash after the game. Like a good girlfriend she obliged and sent him a smiley face emoji as the response which he showed me as proof.
What a wonderful, cheating bastard he was! Those words repeated over and over in my head.
Now we were back in his room. He grabbed me by the waist and pulled me in close to kiss me again. This time something came over me, I began to enjoy the kiss. I kissed him back and it felt really good. His hands started to feel across my body. He pulled my shirt over my head. I reached out to pull his off to reveal his flat stomach and broad shoulders. I ran my hands down the length of his back. He kissed my neck while squeezing my arms. He was obsessed with my body. The feeling was intoxicating. He pushed me down onto the bed and climbed on top of me. I soon felt my belt buckle loosen and my zipper come down.
This was really happening. Oh shit this was really happening. I just met this guy. I don’t even know if guys are what I am into. It feels nice to have someone like you though. No, this is too soon. I can’t do this. This is too much. Stop!
I stopped his hands from roaming my body.
Me: I don’t think I am ready for this. I’m no homewrecker as my mom says.
Adrian: *exhales*
Then Adrian lays down next to me with a look of relief on his face.
Me: Are you disappointed?
Adrian: No, I am relieved. I didn’t really know what I was doing.
Me: Well, you seemed pretty skilled to me.
Adrian: Yeah, I’ve been with a few girls, but you would be my first guy. Heck, I thought you were going to punch me after that kiss earlier.
Me: Why did you kiss me if you weren’t sure then.
Adrian: It was kind of involuntary. You kind of make me do weird stuff.
Me: Me? I make you do weird stuff? I’m the one letting a guy stick his tongue down my throat.
We laughed and talked for a few hours then we started to fall asleep. My eyes had closed when he whispered into my ear.
Adrian: By the way, Morgan is just a friend. So how about we go on a date? Do guys do that? You know confused guys.
He laughs as he finishes his sentence. I roll over to face him. I’d never looked into anyone’s eyes before that day. I saw something grand and alluring behind his smile. I saw what most people chalk up to attraction, I called it possibilities. I agreed to go on a date with him and he kissed me on the cheek. Soon he was fast asleep with his arms wrapped around my waist and his legs clutched around mine. My heart was beating so fast. I think at the time I knew I’d found something that wouldn’t have a happy ending. I was soon asleep myself in that bed, with that boy, that was always late, but for once seemed to come around right on time.
