The Morning Walk 12/15/15
I decided to take my own advice and get up early to walk around the neighborhood. I figured it would get me started for the day. I also knew it would feed my need to observe people doing the most mundane tasks. I love to see morning routines in full swing. Since I live in busy Los Angeles any day is sure to be a treat for the eyes.
I walked out my house and made a left towards the main street closest to my house. As I made my way to the end I saw a mother meticulously rearranging her two kids outfits for school. I switched to the other side walk as it seemed to consume her attention and a collision was imminent.
I passed teenagers standing at the bus stop one holding a book and pretended to read. I can only assume he was a burgeoning hipster practicing his look for the day. The second kid seemed to loaded down with all of the day’s materials. He wore a backpack full of books, a duffle bag filled to the brim flanked one shoulder and he was dressed head to toe in sweats. I think we can safely assume he plays sports.
I came to the intersection next where my favorite grocery store was located. I waited for chance at crossing the street, because in LA even when it says you can walk a car may still be coming. Use caution my friends.
After crossing the busy Vermont Ave., I walked past a group of elderly people sitting at the bus stop. Any other time this would be all that strange, but two buses pulled up and they didn’t move or attempt to catch either. I would like to think their doing the same thing as me, watching the world in its truest form. So I dredged on through the streets surrounding the USC campus. I watched as girls did the walk of shame, some even the drive away of shame, and guys giving each other high-fives in yards scattered with red Solo cups. It was truly the end of the semester.
I made my way to my halfway point and decided it was time to make my way back home. The second half of the walk was a bit on eventful. At least it seemed so in the moment.
I passed two empty car seats and a two elderly men reminiscing about the good ole day. No offense guys, but every day is a good ole day.
I say another mother placing her daughter into a car seat while arguing with a friend about how the neighborhood has declined in recent years. I found it funny because aside from myself there was no one to be seen in any direction. To me a quiet morning is a sign of a excellent place to live people are just going about their day and trying to make the most of it.
The sun poured through the streets as the clouds opened up and it became another beautiful day. I saw a guy delivering Coca Cola products to the corner store and a dad dropping off his two daughters at school. So, I realized it is not so much about the morning routine as it is about how much you accomplish in the day as a whole. Get up early, sleep in late, work hard, take the day off, exercise, indulge a little, or indulge a lot, most of all find a new routine each day.
I hope that my morning helped you start yours. Tomorrow is just a story away.
