DNA Part 5

I don’t think that night could have gotten any better. We toiled over which movie to see, with Adrian finally deciding on something about a coven of witches. Secretly, he must have known I couldn’t pass up a good supernatural thriller. As soon as we walked into the theater a large muscular guy approached us at the concession stand. I watched as Adrian and him struck up a casual conversation. I ordered a large popcorn and coke pretending like I wasn’t eavesdropping. I didn’t hear anything of note until my name came up. Suddenly, Adrian tapped me on the shoulder directing my attention toward them.

Adrian: Hey, have you met Tripp yet?
Me: No, should I have?
Adrian: Oh right. Yeah, this is my roommate.
Tripp: What’s up dude!
Me: What’s up. I was starting to think you were an imaginary friend that he made up.

Tripp laughed and winked at me. I brushed it off as a twitch of his eye muscles.

Tripp: Well, he seems cool.
Adrian: Yeah, I think so.
Me: Who?

Before I could say anything else a petite woman pulled Tripp off to a starting movie, but not before he whispered into Adrian’s ear.

What is it with people and whispering?

Adrian blushed upon hearing Tripp’s words and took hold of my hand once again. I was starting to get accustomed to this level of PDA. I handed him the drink to hold and we rushed to find good seats before the movie began. Luck was in our favor that night because the auditorium was pretty empty. I wanted to sit up top, but Adrian had his sights set on mid-level dead center. The trailers started to roll and we both turned off our phones.

Silence your phones before all movies kids!

Adrian let out a seemingly unintentional yawn and soon his arm was around me.

What a little player he was turning out to be.

So, I did the only thing a person in my situation could do. I removed his arm and proceeded to put mine around him. He snuggled up close to me and started to eat more popcorn. This was turning into a pretty wonderful night. Then I felt a hand caressing my thigh. I was about to look down to make sure it wasn’t a phantom when Adrian pulled me in for a kiss. I’m pretty sure we missed the first 20 minutes of that movie. I held his face as we continued to make out and my hands started to wander across his body. His chest was rock solid and his arms firm. Adrian didn’t play any sports so this type of fitness came from good honest hard work in the gym. I had my hand under his shirt rubbing his six pack as he let out a soft sigh. He was loving it and I aimed to please. I kissed his neck and he squeezed my thigh again, but this time his hand had found its way much higher. I decided to return the favor and migrated my hands a little bit lower. Just above the waistline. It was definitely getting hot in the room. Our bodies that close feeding off of each other and every touch of his hands sent shivers down my spine. This guy had my blood pumping and I soon learned that his blood was surely flowing freely.

I had never touched another guy’s…...well you know, so I took this as my chance to explore my curiosity. I slowly moved my hand down to test the waters. Adrian reclined slightly in his seat while constantly keeping our lips locked. He moaned rather loudly when my hand stopped squarely on his crotch. Like his chest, it too was solid as a rock.

Not once after sitting down for the movie did we notice how much attention we had drawn from other moviegoers. I saw the movie attendant hang a left and slowly walk up the steps to our row. I figured we’d save him the time and leave on our own accord. I strategically placed the large popcorn in Adrian’s hand telling him to hold it in the right spot. We dodged the attendant and escaped out a side door still covered by the theater’s dark ambiance. I couldn’t have my favorite past time banning me for conduct unbecoming of a southern gentleman.

Once outside we laughed about what just happened and were in no hurry to get back to the car. Behind the building was a lone streetlight that we stopped under to catch our breath.

Adrian: You almost got us arrested with your dirty minded intentions.
Me: You were already standing at attention before that last part anyway.

We laughed a bit more and I pulled him in close for a long deep kiss. Now back at the car, we discussed what to do next. I told him that I wouldn’t mind walk around campus and he agreed. Adrian cranked up and sped off, giving the movie theater sign the finger and screaming “the popcorn sucks” to an empty parking lot. Gotta love a guy with a love of films.

I could see how deserted the campus was as Adrian pulled into a parking spot behind his dorm. This was not an unusual occurrence since we attended what some call a suitcase university.

Suitcase University: A large majority of students go back home or out of the city on weekends, so students never really unpack or really move in.

I actually preferred the campus that way, with the least amount of idiots ruining my Saturday tea time and Sunday brunch. It was quiet and peaceful on the weekends. I knew the perfect spot for an end to a wonderful first date. I took off running toward the quad. Adrian followed with a puzzled look on his face. I beckoned him to come on and keep up. We entered the quad at the farthest end. I enjoyed seeing all the lamp posts that lined the entire length of the quad. It was like my mini version of Central Park. The lights illuminated the trees that were scattered throughout the space. There was this one huge tree that always caught my eye as I walked from class. It was so big and massive that the light only reached halfway up the trunk. If I hadn’t already seen it in daylight I might have believed it stopped at the light’s end.  I took up residence on my favorite bench in front of the College of Business facing this grand old tree. When Adrian finally caught up to me he took a seat and laid his head in my lap.

Adrian: Now was running really necessary…
Me: I have to keep you on your toes.
Adrian: Well, this is a nice spot. Your favorite?
Me: Sort of. This is more like my favorite tree.
Adrian: You have a favorite tree already. I’m still working on favorite pizza topping.

I laughed at him. No one had ever made me smile in such a genuine way before I met Adrian. I told him about how much I related to this old tree. I had been through so much in my short life. This tree reminded me that onlookers can’t always see the entire picture.

Me: You can’t really see how great this tree is if you are up close, but it can provide you with shade from the sun. You can look up and count all of its branches and leaves, but you might miss out on something happening around you. You may even want to climb it to see what it sees from high above the building tops, but you might not see the lumberjack coming to chop it down. If you stand back just far enough you can see it all, but you will never feel the touch of its bark under your fingers. So, what do you do?

Just then he said something I’ll never forget to this day. It stands out as the moment I knew our lives would be intertwined for some time to come.

Adrian: The answer is simple. You bring along a person to help shade you from the sun when you’re looking from afar, a person who will loan you their fingers when you want to count the branches, a person who will race you to the top as you climb the tree trunk, and someone to warn you that a man with an ax is trying to chop down your favorite tree.
Me: Have I met that person?
Adrian: I always wanted to fight a lumberjack…..

Illuminated by the light over head, I looked into the eyes of this person and was entranced by what I saw. I had started on this journey with him, not really knowing if I was ready to take it. He looked back at me with that same smile, those same eyes, and for the first time in my life I felt like someone really loved me.

I looked into the night sky searching for a sign that this was all right. I needed something that would tell me not to punish myself for loving this wonderful person, yet I could only make out the outline of the top of this very old tree. It was there and still majestic even if at night no one cared to look. I would still grow even if it was seen as ugly or out of place. I looked back down to see Adrian fast asleep in my lap. I didn’t have the heart to wake him, so I sat there with my arm draped over him and our hands cupped tightly together until morning.

To be continued…….
